The Potomac Chapter of The Links, Incorporated began in
December 1982 as the Beltway Women's League with a group of 35 women who
lived around the Washington, DC metro-area beltway. A year and
a half
later, in June 1984, the Potomac Chapter was chartered in Alexandria,
Virginia - the 206th such Chapter in Linkdom.
Many of the community service initiatives begun
as programs of the Beltway Women's League have endured to this day.
Early on, the Potomac Chapter distinguished itself among Links chapters as
community and service-oriented, designing and implementing innovative programs
focused on youth. "Youth Encounters With Success," Project YES, was
the first such program, and targeted youth in Alexandria, Virginia's Cameron
Village areas. Field trips, test taking, crafts, arts, and
intergenerational activities were among the sessions planned and
implemented.
Of the original 35 charter members, 24 have
retained their membership with the Potomac Chapter. The 60 chapter members
have distinguished themselves in their chosen careers, and in their
community service, earning professional and civic recognition for their
exemplary efforts.
